Kostanna

Kostanna is a mix between jousting and archery. Each team has seven riders, these are made up of five “Kasors” who are armed with a shield and lance. Their objective is to knock off the opposing riders. One “Gwithy” armed with a large shield, they protect the targets from the “Sethers” armed with a bow and nine arrows. Their aim is to score points by shooting three targets.

Each game, known as a “Parow” lasts for 70 minutes, made up of four, 17 and a half minutes, quarters. The Sether shoot nine arrows per quarter and then replenished, so they have 36 arrows in total.

There are two ways of scoring points, by knocking opponents off their horses or by hitting one of the three targets. Five points are awarded for knocking a rider off their horse and one to ten points are awarded for hitting the target depending on how close the arrow is to the gold centre or the “Cyclops”.
If one teams riders have all been knocked off the Parow ends and the team with the most points win. If the Parow continues to its conclusion of 70 minutes, then all remaining riders earn an additional five points each.

All riders wear armour, but the sport has become quite safe, although still dangerous. In its purest form in Old Kerensia, the aim was to kill your opponent’s not to simply knock them off. However, in these more civilised times, it is now good enough to unseat a rider rather than kill them. knocking riders off their horses (once a rider is knocked off, they are out of the Parow) and scoring points by.

All players from the opposition team must be knocked off to win. Each Parow lasts for 70 minutes, 4 quarters of 17 mins 30 seconds. If riders remain on each team then the Parow goes down to points and the number of riders remaining (5 points per rider) are added to each score.

The points systems are as follows:

1 – 10 points for hitting the target
5 points for unseating a rider
5 points awarded per rider remaining if Parow is played to 70 minutes
The Players:

1 Sether – shoots at targets, armed with a short recurve bow with 9 arrows
1 Gwithy – protects the targets, armed with an oversized shield
5 Kasors – unseats opposition riders, armed with a lance and a regular shield

The Parows are played in tournaments, the most prestigious of them all is the Grand Tournament of Kerensia, the world cup of Kostanna.
